Tonight, The Union Project

Tonight is UNWRAPPED, the annual holiday party at the Union Project in Highland Park. I may be committed to studying for the final final of the year, but Lucy is taking my place and will be accompanying the dolls, the bags, the grandma-approved underwear as they are up for sale in the East End of Pittsburgh. The party goes from 7-11 tonight (EST, in case you’re traveling in) — and part of the proceeds go to the Union Project’s fund. The monsters are ready!!!

Pittsburgh Houses Tote Bags

A new crop of fresh white architectural bags, Pittsburgh houses! Screenprinted onto brushed white canvas, with a screenprinted Pittsburgh on the other side. There’s about five of the bags, all medium-small size, lunch-picnic size. The ink is auburn, sometimes with a hint of purple. All up on Etsy!

The Beechview Project: Six New Talking Heads

For the second of 1619 Broadway’s window: six more talking heads with their thoughts on Beechview. I’m having too much fun with the colors — the man in line behind me at the CVS photo booth said they were gorgeous, and I couldn’t help but agree. I love these!

This time around, I avoided cardboard (curling and warping as it does in the July sun) and glue (which bubbles in it). Instead, for bases I cut white circles out of my brother’s old science fair presentation boards — goodbye analysis of fast food wrapper biodegradability! And for adhesive, just staples. I don’t think they’re too distracting, at least not as bad as the glue + summer = weird equation currently occurring on my first nine circles. Here we go, round two!

The Beechview Project: Up & Atem on Broadway Avenue

So Pittsburgh is hot, sticky hot. 1619 Broadway Avenue is hotter, though. And what does that mean? One thing: duct tape war! I decided it was the easiest way to hang my talking heads in Beechview. I tried a few bouts of hanging, securing, rehanging, resecuring, and the sun won every time. Duct tape melted, circle heads collapsed, repeat. But today I got the twine and needles out, and knotted & sewed the heads up to the window-frame, so fingers crossed I’ve finally bested my nemesis sun.

Tomorrow: 6 new talking heads! Now that I’ve learned my July lesson, no more duct tape, no more glue, nothing more that could melt, bubble, drip, or burst. Back to the basics — staples, jute and straight pins. We’ll see how I’m defeated next time…

The Beechview Project: The Talking Heads

Onto the next stage of The Beechview Project! Thanks to lots of responses to my calls for thoughts on Beechview, I’ve prepared the first crop of 9 talking heads, for display in 1619 Broadway. They’ll go up tomorrow.

I have to take some pride in my thriftiness here — altogether, they cost just $5.29 to print out — 15″ circles printed out in 4×6″ glossy photo tiles. Thanks CVS! I cut them out and assembled them onto thick cardboard circles I cut out from old computer screen boxes. The photo tiles were Elmer glued on, and then the cardboard circles were straightpinned onto a wide swath of ribbon. Tomorrow, I’ll tie the ribbon up above the window, so that the 9 will hang as a grid in one of the giant 1619 windows.

I still need more responses for the next 9 circles, so come leave feedback if you haven’t already!

Three Steeler Nation Tattoo Men Dolls

My first Steelers Nation Tattoo Men — three barrel chested, pin headed, massive armed guys. After drawing the tattoos and assembling the bodies, here are the completed men. Each almost 3 feet tall! Long legs, very squeezable (muscle? fat?) torsos, and ambivalent faces. Now that I’ve warmed up with these basic guys, time to take a crack at the big-time tattoo men!

Men dolls: My first 3 tattoo Steelers Nationals!

Lots of tattoos, arms, backs, midriffs. And nipples too, my first attempt at those too. I compiled a bunch of different tattoos from the Miller Gallery’s growing collection of Steelers Fans’ body art, and markered them onto a flesh-colored stiff fabric, watercolor-penciled in some color, and sewed on faces. They are huge!

Drawn Shoes: Raspberry Sharpie on White Croc

On my way to New York to meet Ciaran, I found bright white plastic shoes in the airport. They are made by Crocs, and they are kind of squeaky plastic, but they are two great weirdly shaped canvases for Sharpie drawing. I decided to draw my daily commute, all 1 hour and 10 minutes of it, across the shoes. So much detail! But if I dare to wear them, I’m sure Pittsburgh’s moisture will smudge it all away.

Over Panther Hollow, someone has embroidered the Schenley Bridge, or really the fencing alongside the bridge’s walkway. Somehow the threads survived the winter, they’re still there, and no one seems to really mind.
