There are big haired brunettes, puppies, dinosaur-dogs, and then there are monsters. It’s a whole new crop of portrait mirrors, all completed and ready to go out in the world — and on sale up at Etsy right now!

I made these two big-brunette-hair portrait mirrors last autumn, in my attempt to devise new uses for old LP albums. I’ve been loathe to part with them. Now it’s time, they’re for sale up on Etsy — but I have to say I want them to go to good homes, in need of large hair, comfortable red chairs, and wildflowers.

In preparation for the I Made It Market last weekend, I went into a mirror frenzy. Monsters, Bumblebees, Cats, Dogs, Robot Aliens! The show was buried under Pittsburgh snow, a no-go, but now I have a little more time to take pictures before I sell them on. Here’s a glimpse of the mirrors in middle of production.

I am making more elephant mirrors, more and more, and indulging in fabric swatches. Thank you Ida, Thank you Ginny, Thank you Alice! I love mixing the colors, someone once told me this advice — if the colors seem to clash, then you just need to add more. Words to live by, if somewhat confusingly when taken beyond the arts+crafts realm.

This is the third Elephant Circle Mirror I’ve made — the other two have sold out over the last two craft sales. People love elephants, I love elephants, and here there are 6 elephants worth of good luck upturned trunks! I’m deploying all my smaller upholstery samplers for maximum color. This one is now available for sale over at Etsy.
Just as with the Monster/Bear mirrors, this one is built around a mirror affixed to a vinyl record, and sewn around with old blankets cut and sewn together. Materialwise, they are purely repurposed, but they are really labor intensive! I enjoy the stitching and the colors enough to be hungry for more. I am planning wedding presents with these, everyone needs more elephants in their life.

Thanks to God’s Helping Hand’s bounty of weird fabric remnants, I made off with two luxurious swatches of white furry fabric.
So finally I found a good use for it: A Monster Mirror! Also known as a Cat Mirror, as it was interpreted by many of the browsers at the Union Project sale.

I cannot put into words how much I enjoy this mirror, and I am very happy that my new sewing ally Suz also loved it, and bought it.
She also promised lots more furry kinds of fabric, maybe some velvets too, so a whole new crop of soft little monsters will be emerging soon! Now I am making a spate more to go up on Etsy and next week’s sale at the Union Project fundraiser. Attack of the Cat Monsters — faces yet to be determined.

Here are the four fabric portrait mirrors I made, and another shopper at the Union Project recommended I do some Mohawks, some side profiles, a sun or two, and straight haired ladies instead of just wild haired ones. The list goes on!

Yesterday was a great sale, maybe the best ever, at the Union Project in Highland Park, all day in the first snowy day of Pittsburgh this season. The dolls, monsters, elephants, lp bags, portrait mirrors, and even a Sarah Palin voodoo doll are released into the wild. So long!

I’m working on a bunch of fabric portraits with mirrors for faces. I’m attaching the mirror to an old LP, then sewing on the portrait surroundings on two layers of fabric — one old blanket from God’s Helping Hand and a dead dark gray dress. This is my first one completed — long neck, big hair, wild flower, in a big red and white chair.
And before I attached the portrait to the mirror, I tried it on myself — some inspiration for a monster with hole for its head, that I can take pictures with at this Saturday’s I Made It Market! Also coming up — a woman with a large mess of hair, a circle of multicolored elephants, and a white furry monster with purple paws, all in fabric portrait mirror form…
