Tax Law Flowchart: Do you have to pay taxes on a scholarship?

Back in law school (around 2012), during one of many deep dives into the IRS code, I found myself asking a classic tax class question:
“I got a scholarship—do I have to pay taxes on it?”

Naturally, instead of just taking notes, I drew a flowchart.

This colorful sketch walks through the logic of when scholarship money is taxable and when it’s not—from tuition and books to housing and teaching stipends. It’s one of those deceptively simple questions that can lead to a very tangled answer—perfect flowchart material, really.

If you’re a law student, tax nerd, bar prepper, or just someone who appreciates a good visual explanation of tricky topics, I’ve turned this drawing into a high-quality art print on heavyweight paper, now available in my Etsy shop:

(Note: it’s based on 2012 law school notes, so don’t rely on it as current legal advice—check for tax code updates!)
